横須賀の「三笠桟橋」から船に乗って10分ほどの無人島「猿島」。
明治14年から昭和20年までの64年間、民間人の立ち入りが許されなかった旧日本軍の要塞でした。

1.東京湾の要塞！歴史遺産エリアを散策
東京湾を守る「要塞の島」だった「猿島」には、猿島砲台や、兵舎・弾薬庫のあとが残っています。
曲がっていたり、高低差があったり。
例え、敵が攻めてきたとしても、なかなか進軍できない造りになっています。
階段に草が生えていたり、苔むしていたり。
植物の生命力は凄まじい。
トンネルのレンガの積み方は「フランス積み」で、日本にはあまりない積み方だとか。
レンガひとつひとつの存在感に圧倒されました。
2.風光明媚な景色だって楽しめちゃう
こうした歴史的建造物のみならず、風光明媚な自然も猿島の魅力。
日蓮洞くつのそばのゴツゴツした岩。
静かな海と対照的な岩の力強さときたら。
東京湾に浮かぶ猿島で、要塞と自然とを堪能しました。
